A Kincardine resident is out $5,800 after falling victim to a scam.
South Bruce OPP say the victim was duped by a computer repair scam. According to police, a pop-up window said something was wrong with the computer, and put the Kincardine resident in touch with someone pretending to be a service technician.
The fraudster ended up convincing the victim the computer had been hacked, and more $5,800 worth of Bitcoin was sent to cover the so-called repairs.
“The South Bruce OPP wants you to know that the computer repair scam has been going for a long time because it continues to make money,” police say in a release. “If you believe that there is a problem with your computer, the best advice is to bring it to a local, authorized, computer repair shop.”
