The Owen Sound Attack picked up a road win in Oshawa to make it back-to-back victories over the weekend.
Cedrick Guindon, Colby Barlow and Ben Cormier scored, as the Attack held on to beat the Generals 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League action at Tribute Communities Centre Sunday evening.
Tyler Graham and Rasmus Kumpulainen had the Generals’ goals.
The Attack (6-5-1-0) never trailed in the game. Guindon put Owen Sound ahead 1-0 at 11:06 of the first period. Servac Petrovsky recovered the puck in the corner and made a move towards the front of the net, and then put a pass on the tape of Guindon’s stick. The Montreal Canadiens prospect moved the puck out wide to his forehand, and put a wrist shot high past Jacob Oster.
Barlow made it 2-0 with 40 seconds left in the first, connecting on the power play. Taos Jordan found him with a pass, and the Attack captain one-timed a slap-shot from the top of the circle on his off-wing through the traffic in front and past Oster. The puck appeared to hit Ethan Burroughs on the way in, but Barlow was credited with the goal, his seventh of the season.
Graham got the Generals on the board at 7:27 of the second. He found the puck after a turnover deep in the Attack zone, and moved out front of the net, fumbling his first shot attempt before firing a low one past the right skate of Carter George. 2-1 Attack.
The two-goal lead for Owen Sound was restored just over five minutes later. Sam Sedley and Cormier found themselves on a 2-on-0 down low in the Generals zone, after the puck squirted to Sedley out of the corner. The Attack overage defenceman passed it over to Cormier on the left side, and he beat Oster to the open net to make it 3-1.
Kumpulainen scored on the power play goal at 13:44 of the third, making it a one-goal game.
The Generals pushed for the tying goal with their net empty late in the third, but had things stamped out by a too many men on the ice call with 20 seconds remaining.
George made 33 saves in the win, while Oster stopped 26 taking the loss. Oshawa outshot Owen Sound 35-29 while going 1 for 4 on the power play; the Attack power play was 1 for 3, but 1 for 5 on the official scoring after the Generals took two penalties in the final 20 seconds of the contest allowing Owen Sound to finish the game with the man advantage.
Next up for the Attack is a home game against the Flint Firebirds (5-6-1) on Wednesday night at the Bayshore.
HOMETOWN TAOS
Sunday night’s game in Oshawa was a homecoming game for Attack defenceman Taos Jordan, who hails from Brooklin. The 19-year-old, third-year blueliner had a solid night for Owen Sound, finishing with an assist, a plus-1 rating, and number of blocked shots — which aren’t tracked in OHL statistics.
BEARS BITE GENNIES, AGAIN
Owen Sound Attack teams have had the better of the Oshawa Generals in recent seasons. Sunday’s victory was the third straight for Owen Sound over Oshawa, after the Attack swept the season series in the 2022-23 campaign. The Attack haven’t lost in regulation at Tribute Communities Centre since the 2016-17 season. The last regulation setback in Oshawa for an Attack team was Nov. 4, 2016, a 2-1 loss. Since then, Owen Sound has gone 7-1-1-1 against the Generals. Coincidentally, two of those Owen Sound losses came during the 2019-20 season, when former Attack head coach Greg Walters was the Generals’ bench boss.
