Saugeen Shores council will wait for reports from staff before deciding how to move forward on a couple of community requests for funding.
Councillors heard delegations Monday night from a group looking for $250,000 in funding for a Southampton Cenotaph refurbishment project and also from a group looking for Town sponsorship support for the Canadian Senior Men’s Amateur golf championship in September 2024.
Councillors generally voiced support and praise for both endeavours.
Vice Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt told golf championship presenters Doug Flowers and Sylvia Sheard, “I look forward to this coming to budget for discussion in November/ December and I know I’ll be getting behind it.”
Mayor Luke Charbonneau also spoke in support of the golf tournament noting, “There’s a huge amount of benefit for our community with an event like this.”

Meanwhile, a couple of council members discussed the idea of giving ‘in-principal’ approval, with Councillor John Divinski wondering why it couldn’t be given Monday night for the proposed cenotaph project.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau noted, “You’re talking about a redesign project of a piece of street in downtown Southampton. Our staff need to give us all of the detailed information about all of what they’re considering, the issues or implications of that work. We need to get that in a report an we need to approve it in response to staff.”
Charbonneau added, “I think it’s the appropriate way to proceed for council. I think it’s never good practice for council to approve things on the same night in response to a delegation. Let’s hear from staff, let’s get that report, we’ll get all the details, we’ll make a decision that’s appropriate on the recommendation and all the information from them, our experts.”
Staff say they have been working with the Southampton Cenotaph Community Committee and it won’t take long to put a report together for council.
