The Huron County Library is going to be doing a pilot project that offers free menstrual products.
When the county was planning the 2023 budget, the Library was allotted $1,000 for the purpose of offering the products to anyone who needed them.
Beth Rumble, the Director of Cultural Services, informed council that her team was ready to start the pilot project, which is expected to last around four months.
The only remaining preparation is to find the appropriate containers for the menstrual products to be last in the washrooms.
Part of the rationale behind the project is to allow everyone, including members of the homeless population, access to sanitary products when they need them.
In their report, the department says that approximately two-thirds of people who menstruate in Canada have missed work or school due to a lack of access to necessary products.
According to a recent survey from Grey Bruce, that number may actually be closer to 75 percent; while 52 percent of respondents often struggled to access products in general.
