The municipality of Kincardine is going to be celebrating Welcoming Week to help make newcomers to the community from all over feel welcome.
Joye Hunt, who is part of Kincardine’s Refugee Committee, says that she feels that their Welcoming event coming up on September 12th is because “I think Kincardine is a very culturally diverse community… and there are many, many services available to newcomers. Unfortunately, not so many know that the services are available.”
The Refugee Committee welcomes and sponsors newcomers to Kincardine and to Bruce County, and is a collaborative effort between the municipality and community partners from Owen Sound, including the YMCA’s Settlement Services, VPI Employment Agency, and Contact North, among others.
The event also serves as a way for members of the community, both new and old, to get to know one another and foster new friendships.
That’s why the event is open to everybody, and there’s no registration required.
The event is being held on September 12th from 4-7 p.m. at the Welcoming Centre, 707 Queen Street, Kincardine.
Light refreshments will also be served.
“Getting to a new community and finding out about services, and making contacts and getting to know people… come see us,” says Hunt.
She also says that even if you attend just to meet new people, it’s possible to find people that you have things in common with, which can also help with social activities and events.
