U15B NorthStars Win Gold
The Owen Sound John Shute Optometry North Stars won the Gold medal
After a dominant round robin, in which they won both games by a combined score of 35-5, the girls punched their ticket to the semifinals with a convincing 15-3 game against Toronto Beaches 2.
In the semifinal game the North Stars were matched up against a strong Hamilton team. After getting out to an early lead and playing excellent defence, the girls simply played aggressive, smart lacrosse to move on to the finals with a 9-6 win.
Of note, was strong ball possession by the mid fielders, timely offence from almost all of the Attackers and very strong goaltending by Payton McKenzie who jumped in net for provincials after their only goalie was injured.
In the gold medal game the John Shute Optometry North Stars shaded Kitchener-Waterloo 9-8
With just minutes left on the clock, Ally Scott netted the game winner resulting in a 9 to 8 victory.
The MVP of the game was Jenna Cranny who won many key draws
U15A North Stars Earn Silver at Provincials
The U15A Owen Sound Fire Fighters North Stars are the provincial silver medalists in the ‘A’ division after losing 14-8 to the undefeated Oshawa Lady Blue Knights at the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships in Oakville on Sunday.
In the gold medal game, after giving up three quick goals, and falling behind 5-1 early in the game, the North Stars closed the gap to 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. The game continued to be close in the second quarter with the Blue Knights holding an 8-6 advantage at halftime. The #1 ranked Oshawa squad showed why they have been the team to beat all season as they pulled away in the second half, ultimately earning the six-goal victory and the gold medal.
London Doyle scored four goals for Owen Sound in the championships game to lead the team. Adalyn Jackson, Taryn Weppler, Bree Wilkins, and Camryn Laycock scored one each.
The Fire Fighters squad earned the berth in the final by defeating the #3 ranked Toronto Beaches 9-8 in double overtime. The North Stars were behind 7-4 after three quarters but some key possessions triggered by Leah Cooper and Rory Jex enabled the North Stars to rally in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Both teams had chances to seal the victory in overtime, but some outstanding defense, along with key saves from North Stars goaltender Marley Woodhouse, enabled the game to remain tied until Bree Wilkins scored early in the second overtime period to send Owen Sound to the final.
Bree Wilkins paced the Owen Sound offense with eight points in the semifinal including four goals. London Doyle added two goals, while Sarah Barfoot, Adalyn Jackson and Taryn Weppler had one goal each.
In the quarterfinal game, Owen Sound defeated the #2 ranked Halton Hills Bulldogs by a score of 11-6. The game was close early, with the teams tied 5-5 in the second quarter. The defensive group of Danielle Brown, Ainsley Smith and Avery Seaman played outstanding from that point on creating turnovers and frustrating the Bulldogs scorers, allowing the North Stars to earn the five-goal victory.
Bree Wilkins led the offence for the North Stars with six points including three goals. London Doyle also scored three goals, while Taryn Weppler and Leah Cooper had two goals, and Mya Good had a single marker.
The North Stars split their two games in pool play losing 14-6 to Oshawa before beating the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks 7-5.
The top scorers in the game versus Oshawa were London Doyle who led the North Stars with three goals, while Bree Wilkins, Taryn Weppler and Adalyn Jackson added singles.
Bree Wilkins led the North Stars to the win over K-W with five goals, while London Doyle and Camryn Laycock had one each.
