The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority gave an update to Goderich town council this week.
Phil Beard, the General Manager and Secretary Treasurer says that they’ve assessed some of the environmental aspects of the region.
He says that they’re working with the shoreline community on a project to help coastal resiliency.
“The purpose of the strategy is to explore ways to improve the resiliency of the coast in a changing climate.”
The MVCA was also able to share the results of their forest health assessment, which was and update of the last assessment that was completed 20 years ago.
“The health of our forests is at risk. Forests are losing the ability to main their health, due to the levels and stress and disturbance that are occurring. Twenty percent of the standing trees that we found in the forests are dead, mainly ash trees. But other species are being impacted as well.”
The next step is to work with partners to evaluate how best to manage local forests to find out how to improve their health.
