Collingwood is taking this week to celebrate the inclusion of people of all abilities.
From May 28th until June 3rd, the town will be celebrating National AccessAbility Week.
The Accessibility Advisory Committee, with the help fo residents and local organizations including E3 Community Services and Breaking Down Barriers will be sharing experiences through their Telling Stories Initiative.
National AccessAbility Week is inspired by Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion world tour and National Access Awareness Week, which was founded in 1988.
In Canada, 20% of people, or around 6.2 million, are living with a disability.
Barriers to accessibility include:
– Negative attitudes or beliefs
– Organizational rules and practices that discriminate or leave people out
– Physical or structural features of a building or outdoor space
– Ways in which information is shared, making it difficult to understand
– Technology including computers, websites, and equipment that are difficult to use.
