The Township of Georgian Bluffs is reminding everyone to avoid encounters with bears this season.
With recent reports of black bears in the area, the township wants everyone to be safe.
They recommend that you ensure trash is covered, pet food is kept indoors, and avoid feeding wildlife.
The township also recommends that fallen produce from yards and gardens is quickly removed.
They advise that most bears are wary of human contact and tend to avoid populated areas like neighbourhoods unless attracted by food smells.
Pets should always be supervised when outdoors, and leash laws should be followed.
For anyone who likes to hike in wooded areas, you can make noises such as singing, whistling, or talking while in forested areas.
If you see a bear, you should not approach it.
If it begins to approach you, make yourself look as big as possible and back away slowly to a safe area.
Non-emergency bear encounters can be reported by calling Ontario Bear Wise at 1-866-514-2327.
