West Grey council is currently not supporting the Municipality of Grey Highlands’ attempt to revive the Grey Gables Long Term Care Working Group.
During a meeting on May 16, West Grey council reviewed a correspondence from Grey Highlands, which was looking to see if other municipalities were interested in joining a renewed working group.
Grey Highlands has been engaging with some municipal neighbours to try to strike a committee focused on lobbying Grey County to re-develop the Markdale long-term care home into a 128-bed facility.
Two years ago, the county scrapped a plan to redevelop Grey Gables over cost concerns. Even the project Grey County is moving ahead with, Rockwood Terrace in Durham, is being scaled down due to rising costs.
Deputy Mayor Tom Hutchinson says while he fully supports maintaining Grey Gables as a county asset, Grey County has put any further development of Grey Gables on hold based on financial implications surrounding the redevelopment of the Rockwood Terrace Long-term Care Home, which will be built with 128 beds.
“I am having a hard time supporting any of this right now. For it to move forward, we need to get the full cost down on the redevelopment of Rockwood done first and that is where we left it at county council. At which time we know the actual financial cost of that, then we can go back and entertain reviewing this. I can tell you right now, Grey County, if we were to support this and start pushing the consideration of future development, the financial impact is not a beneficial thing for any of the municipalities or towns that are a part of Grey County,” says Hutchinson.
West Grey council supported Mayor Kevin Eccles’ recommendation of receiving the correspondence from Grey Highland’s for information and take no further action at this time
