The provincial government has introduced a new piece of legislation that if passed would begin the process of dissolving the Regional Municipality of Peel.
The Hazel McCallion Act would make the cities of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon independent.
The proposed legislation is named after the region’s longest-serving mayor, the late Hazel McCallion, who served for 36 years before retiring at age 93.
The Town of Caledon says that the main focus is to advocate for what is best for the town.
The province says there will be a transition board to ensure a fair dissolution for Peel Region, which would also work to protect local services.
They say that the board, which will have up to five people, will help facilitate the change in local government and oversee the financial affairs of Peel and its lower-tier municipalities until dissolution.
The goal is to have Caledon, Mississauga, and Brampton become single-tier municipalities on January 1, 2025.
The Ontario government is also moving to ensure the improvement of local governments while also preparing for future growth.
