West Grey council is supporting the Durham Business Improvement Area (BIA) as it starts a Farmers’ Market in Durham.
During a meeting on May 16, council received a correspondence from the Durham BIA requesting approval to use the parking lot south of the Northern Credit Union for the market and to access barricades to section off the market from vendor parking.
The BIA says they are looking to hold the market every Friday between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. from June 16 to Oct. 13.
“This event would allow the citizens of the West Grey community to shop local and build community. It will provide fresh local produce and good to the people of West Grey while promoting local agriculture and environmental sustainability,” says the BIA.
Additionally, the BIA says the market will also serve as a prelude to Music in the Park.
Coun. Doug Hutchinson says this is not the first farmers market to come to the area.
“Over the years I have been on council, we have talked about farmers markets and had some variations of different farmers markets come into town with people trying to run it. Nothing has really lasted, but this lady that’s pushing this through the BIA is hoping to run it,” says Hutchinson. “We will see how it goes. She is looking at possibly 10 booths and I think she has some experience in this area.”
