Meaford is approving a motion from Deputy Mayor Shirley Keaveney to donate $50,000 a year until 2026 to the local hospital foundation.
During a meeting on May 15, council received the motion.
It recommends as the municipality had previously budgeted annually to support the Meaford Hospital Foundation and as the previous commitment of support has expired, it seeks to make this annual donation over the next few years.
While council voted to support provide funding for the foundation, Coun. Harley Greenfield proposed upping the donation.
“In this age of inflation, should we be perhaps looking at may be $60,000. I don’t like committing tax payer dollars but if there ever was a worth while cause, I think our hospital is it,” says Greenfield.
Coun. Steven Bartley supported Greenfield’s motion, but says the $50,000 is already slated in the budget.
“If you want to go $60,000, I think it should be at next year’s budget deliberations. I don’t want to spend next year’s money until I see what happens,” says Bartley.
