Owen Sound’s mayor wants to find out if it’s worth cleaning up a vacant city-owned property for a potential sale.
Mayor Ian Boddy says the city owns about 13 acres of land in the Industrial Park north of 23rd Street East — near the 16th Avenue East bend — that sits idle after being used to store soil and materials from the “Big Dig” infrastructure renewal of 2nd Avenue East in 2000.
Boddy gave notice during Monday’s city council meeting he intends to introduce a motion to direct staff to prepare a report outlining the requirements and estimated costs to remove soils and prepare the land for sale, and to provide the estimated fair market value for the lands after cleanup.
“We need to have a look at it and see if it needs to be cleaned up. And what we can do to make sure the land is ready to be sold if we get another inquiry,” Boddy explains. “There’s interest in Owen Sound clearly for residential purposes, we’re seeing that. But we’re also seeing potentials with industrial and commercial developers in the city.”
The motion will be discussed during Owen Sound council’s meeting on May 29.
