Memorial Cup Points Format
from chl.ca
The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) is announcing a modification to the point system for the 2023 Memorial Cup presented by Kia, which is scheduled from May 25 – June 4 in Kamloops, British Columbia. Specifically, the 103rd edition of this prestigious tournament will revert back to a point system where two points are awarded to the winning team in each round-robin game of the Memorial Cup, regardless of whether the team wins in regulation time or overtime, while the losing team will not receive a point in regulation or overtime.
This is a change from last year’s Memorial Cup in Saint John, New Brunswick, which incorporated for the first time a point system that saw teams receive three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, and one point for an overtime loss.
Remaining in place from last year, however, will be the new overtime rules that were implemented for round-robin games at the Memorial Cup. Overtime in the round-robin will continue to be played in a 3-on-3 format in 20-minute periods until a winner is decided. The intermissions between the third period and overtime and each additional overtime period are 15 minutes. There are no TV timeouts during overtime although a quick scrape in front of the nets and benches will be done at the first stoppage after the 10-minute mark should the overtime continue.
It is worth noting that these overtime rules differentiate slightly from the tie-breaker, semi-final and championship games of the Memorial Cup, where overtime is played in a 5-on-5 format in 20-minute periods until a winner is decided.
The first game of the 2023 Memorial Cup is set for Friday, May 26 at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST between host Kamloops Blazers and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) champion.
Hill Heads Out
from attackhockey.com
The Owen Sound Attack is announcing that Associate Coach Jordan Hill has stepped down from his role with the team for family reasons.
Hill, joined the Attack organization as an Assistant Coach prior to the 2017-18 season. Spending five season’s with Owen Sound, it was prior to the 2021-22 season that Hill was promoted to the Associate Coaches role, as he continued to develop his coaching skills. Hill has been able to learn from a trio of Attack coaches from his time in the organization, having spent time under Todd Gill, Alan Letang and current Head Coach Greg Walters.
“The circumstances that Jordan came into as a coach, and where he is at now it’s just remarkable,” Attack General Manager Dale DeGray said. “He’s grown so much, from coming in as a young fresh faced coach, he’s really worked hard and crafted his skills into what they are today.”
“It’s sad to see him go. He was a big part of our coaching room, and the dressing room for that matter,” DeGray offered. “He’ll be missed, and we wish all the best.”
Hill’s coaching trajectory has been well noticed by Hockey Canada, as he was invited to participate in the Under 17 Summer Development Camp last year, as a guest coach.
“I’d like to thank Dale DeGray and the entire Attack Ownership group for providing me the opportunity to help coach this team,” Hill said. ” The support I got from Dale, Dr. Bob Severs, Paul and Peter MacDermid, and the belief they showed in me allowed me the opportunity to grow as a coach.”
“It’s a tough time to step away obviously,” Hill continued. ” I know the state of the team and how close they are to winning. I’m definitely going to be looking forward to watching them from afar next season. as they compete for an OHL Championship. I’ve built som great relationships over the years with current and past players/coaches, and will continue to carry those memories as I move forward.”
“It’s hard,” said Hill. “But I believe it’s the right decision for myself and my family at the time to move on.”
The Attack’s search to fill the coaching position will begin immediately. All interested candidates can contact Dale DeGray via phone (416-669-7310) or email (ddegray@attackhockey.com)
