A Chesley woman faces charges after a distraction theft investigation in Hanover.
Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll says on Twitter, town police investigated a distraction theft where a female suspect entered a store requesting the clerk call her a taxi.
According to Knoll, while the clerk was placing the call, the suspect stole the clerk’s wallet.
Police located and arrested a 32-year-old woman from Chesley for theft, resulting in further charges after officers reportedly located other stolen merchandise from a neighbouring store.
Police say the wallet was recovered in a garbage can, and the victim’s credit cards were located on the suspect. She was charged with theft, possession of stolen property and breach of probation.
Meanwhile, Knoll says, while processing the suspect, officers determined she has close to 50 mug shots on file with various police agencies in Ontario.
He says, “That represents a significant amount of crime, many, many investigative hours for police, a ton of court time, lots of probation officer work and more.”
