Meaford council is approving the replacement of some equipment at the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre.
During a Feb. 27 meeting, council received a report from Treasurer and Director of Financial Services Valerie Manning. It recommended giving pre-budget approval to purchase a new arena chiller and brine pump for $150,000 and award the project to CIMCO Refrigeration for $151,515.
The report says the 2023 capital budget identified the replacement of a chiller and brine pump at the community centre, and is a major component to the refrigeration system at the facility, allowing it to make ice.
As the current equipment, the brine pump installed in 1977 and the chiller installed in 1999, has exceeded its life expectancy and is vulnerable to failure, staff are proposing to purchase the needed equipment.
“The Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre operates the ice surface annually from Thanksgiving weekend until the last weekend in March. The facility relies on the refrigeration equipment to make and maintain ice throughout the season,” says the report.
To maintain current service levels, the report says the equipment will need to be preordered by March.
To meet the increased price of $151,515 for the project from CIMCO Refrigeration, an additional $1,515 will be funded from the Facilities Reserve.
