Owen Sound Police say stunt driving for a crowd has resulted in impaired driving charges for a 20-year-old.
Police say on Feb. 19 around 2:40 a.m., after liquor licenced establishments had closed for the night, a group of individuals had congregated in the area of 2nd Avenue at 9th Street East in the city’s downtown core.
Police say in an attempt to impress the crowd, a driver of a pickup truck, who had brought their vehicle to a stop in front of the crowd, performed a break burnout creating a cloud of black smoke before heading south bound well beyond the 40 kilometre an hour speed limit.
“Although the crowd seemed impressed with the performance the police officer patrolling in the area wasn’t. It took several blocks before the officer was able to reach the vehicle and safely bring it to a stop at the top of the Greenwood Cemetery Hill,” say police in a release.
Police say the attending officer administered a roadside alcohol test, and it was confirmed the driver had been drinking. When the accused was taken into custody, the passenger of the vehicle aggressively and physically intervened, and was arrested as well and taken into custody.
Police say the two were escorted to the police station where it was determined the driver had double the legal limit of alcohol in his blood to drive.
The driver is facing criminal charges including impaired operation, as well as a seven-day vehicle impoundment, and a 90-day licence suspension.
Police say the two accused from Grey County were later released from custody and are set to appear in court in Owen Sound in the coming weeks.
