Grey Bruce Health Services is hosting an education session for the new Wellness and Treatment Centre set to open in Owen Sound next year.
GBHS selected the former Bayview Public School on 6th Street A East in Owen Sound as the site of the new facility in September.
The facility will be geared to support people with mental health and addiction needs.
Grey Bruce Health Services says as part of its community engagement framework, it has begun communicating with residents living in the immediate vicinity of the new facility.
As part of the next step in engagement, GBHS will be holding the education session at TheXchange at 825 2nd Avenue East in Owen Sound on Dec. 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The GBHS Wellness and Treatment Centre team leads will provide attendees more details about the facility and answer questions.
The project is the first of its kind in the region, and will be able to accommodate both inpatient and outpatient services for residents across Grey Bruce.

- 36 New Addiction Treatment Beds Announced For Grey Bruce Health Services
GBHS received $6 million in funding earlier this year from the Ministry of Health to add 36 beds to address the growing number of people in the region who need addiction and mental health services.
Those who attend the centre will be able to start in a withdrawal management program before moving to relapse prevention therapy.
Additionally, the centre will include space for indigenous healing, spiritual care, recreational therapy for group activities, and community partner space.
“The new wellness centre will help the most vulnerable people get off the street and provide a safe space while they get medical treatment and therapy to get back on their feet. Most of these individuals have co-existing alcohol and drug issues and mental health challenges, compounded by unemployment and homelessness. Hospitals are not the best setting for this type of care, and that’s why we are opening a new, purpose-built wellness and treatment facility,” says GBHS.
Questions about the session can be sent to communityquestions@gbhs.on.ca, with further up-to-date information about the centre available on the GBHS website here.
