Owen Sound Police say they were kept busy over the weekend with weather-related calls.
Police say while there were only a few collisions reported, officers responded to more than two dozens incidents on Sunday alone where drivers or other people required assistance.
Just after 9 a.m. Sunday morning, Owen Sound Police say they were called to a residence in the 400 block of 8th Street East where a man was heard yelling from inside his residence.
Police say when officers arrived they discovered a 55-year-old man was unable to leave his home because of the snow built up at his door, causing him to exit through a window.
“The man spoke of having a disability and being unable to shovel the snow that had piled up at his front door,” City Police say in a statement. “As a result, officers shovelled the snow and salted the steps before heading to their next call for service.”
Owen Sound Police say they received a call from a concerned citizen around 2:30 p.m. Sunday and officers attended the 200 block of 10th Street West, where a 44-year-old woman was lying in a snowbank unresponsive.
Police say an officer was able to pick the woman up, get her on her feet and into a police cruiser for warmth until paramedics arrived.
“The woman was suffering from hypothermia and required medical treatment at the Grey Bruce Health Services,” Owen Sound Police say.
Police also attended an upper eastside location where a 27-year-old man became stuck in several feet of snow trying to cut across a field.
“The man had been sitting in the snow for at least 40 (minutes) citing he was unable to walk on his own,” police say.
Firefighters attended to help out and then paramedics arrived to take the man to hospital, city police say.
Police say they also responded to calls in order to check on the emotional wellbeing of people who were feeling distressed about the weather.
“During one of those incidents, a 52-year-old resident indicated that she felt overwhelmed and trapped based on the abundance of snow which continued to fall. As a result, officers assisted by shovelling some of the heavy snow on her property in order to ease the woman’s anxiety,” police say.
Owen Sound Police say the timely calls of concerned community members helped them respond quickly to these incidents and ensure the outcomes weren’t “significantly worse.”
