Halloween is coming back to Fairy Lake in Southampton and organizers are encouraging people to join in on the lakeside trick-or-treating event.
Resident Katherine Leonard says this year marks the third year they’ve held a Halloween event at Fairy Lake. It’s set for 4-6 in the afternoon on Monday, October 31st.
“We need people and we need treats,” says Leonard, adding, “If you want to take part, just show up.”
She says, “People can drop off treats, they can come and set up themselves and give out treats and watch, they can dress up, they can do something spooky sitting around fairy lake, anything.”
“It’s not really a formal, organized thing– it’s just, we do it, just grassroots,” says Leonard, adding, “It’s very unofficial and unorganized and it’s the best place to be on Halloween.”
The Bruce County Museum says it will also have treats at its back gate.
Leonard says the Fairy Lake event was created during the pandemic, when trick-or- treating had to be adjusted. Leonard says they didn’t want kids to miss out on the holiday, and decided Fairy Lake would be a good place to hold an outdoor trick-or-treating event which allowed kids to head around the lake in one direction with masks and distancing.
She says the first year, they had fun with people hiding and scaring trick or treaters, “We didn’t really give out many treats– it was just more of a walk and then it became so popular that last year we had over 200 kids.”
Leonard says the weather can get unpleasant by Lake Huron around Halloween and notes, “Fairy Lake is a little mystical dish of shelter on what can be a nasty day.”
The starting point which is the band shell off High Street and it takes about 25 minutes to walk around the lake.
