Former Owen Sound North Stars Win Medals at the Ontario University Athletics Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships
Four graduates of the Owen Sound North Stars girls’ field lacrosse program won a gold medal at the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships in Toronto on Sunday. Jordan Kosempel, Kennedy Coghlin, Tara Meikle and Kenna McKee are members of the Queen’s Gaels team which defeated the Trent Excalibur by a score of 16-5. After falling behind 4-2 in the first quarter, the Gaels pulled ahead in the second quarter and were never seriously challenged again.
Earlier in the day, Queen’s defeated the Guelph Gryphons 10-2 in their semifinal game. Queen’s finished the season undefeated including two pool play wins against the Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 14-6, and a 19-2 win over the McMaster Marauders.
Meikle was selected as the OUA Rookie of the Year.
Former North Star Reese Wilkins earned a bronze medal as her Western Mustangs defeated Guelph 11-5. In the game, Western jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game.
Western narrowly missed earning a birth in the final after dropping their semi-final game to Trent in overtime by a score of 10-9. The Mustangs fell behind 8-2 before storming back to tie the game 9-9 with less than three minutes to play. Wilkins led the charge scoring three second half goal. Western went 2-0 in pool play defeating Guelph 6-2 and Brock 24-0.
Other North Stars who played in the championships were Kirsten Sutter and Mallory Stephens (Guelph Gryphons), Jamie Carr and Ryleigh Elliott (Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks), and Rachel Woods (Brock Badgers).
The OUA Championships ran from October 21-23 and were hosted by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
