The Special Investigations Unit has found no reasonable grounds to believe that an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offense in connection with the serious injuries suffered by a 23-year-old man in a collision while fleeing police in Wasaga Beach.
On June 25, the man collided with the back of a stopped vehicle on Main Street. He left the scene and sped down Mosley Street, where the officer began to pursue him. The driver bypassed a roadblock and then crashed into another vehicle.
He was then chased on foot and arrested. He was taken to hospital for the treatment of a fractured femur and hip as a result of the crash.
The director of the SIU, Joseph Martino, says was unable to reasonably conclude that the officer’s driving amounted to a marked departure from a reasonable standard of care, leaving no basis for proceeding with criminal charges.
