Goderich Council has given support for a planned expansion of the Goderich Community Garden.
Committee Member Daniela Klicper shared some background for the park, namely that both residents and local businesses are very supportive for the initiative.
“This garden has been an opportunity to support a healthy and inclusive community development initiative. Studies show that community gardens have a positive impact on individuals living within one kilometre of the garden, and that impact can increase over time, particularly for marginalized groups.”
The steering committee for the GCG are hoping to expand eastward toward the path that divides Columbus Park.
Klicper also says that community gardens can provide a lot of benefits, even if they can’t totally solve the issue of inadequate access to healthy food. “One being access to more produce during the harvesting season. There’s physical activity, greater sense of community — that’s something we’ve been hearing a lot about this past season, improved gardening skills, lowering stress levels, and again those stronger social networks within Goderich.”
If council gives their approval for the steering committee’s proposal, then the Goderich Community Garden is hoping to start their expansion project in the spring.
Goderich Town Council concurred with the expansion of the Goderich Community Garden at Columbus Park in principal and referred it the Director of Operations.
