1) Why are you running?
I am running again after 2 terms because I feel there are a number of projects that I would like to see completed. We have 2 sub-divisions under way, a Long Term Care home to be built by Grey County, and a police station to build.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
This is a bit difficult for a municipality but we can do small things that may help. We have created a Community Garden program for residents to grow their own food in Durham. There is definitely a shortage of affordable housing so we can support builders by sourcing grants, dropping permit fees, etc to create more.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
New home builds are helping West Grey develop but we also need growth in our commercial and industrial sectors. An aggressive approach to advertising empty commercial spaces and shovel ready industrial lots would help to drive this. Development charges from new builds also are a means to improve facilities, parks, Infrastructure and more.
4) Do you think a municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
Yes, whether it be in form of funding or getting involved at the committee level. The more voices the better in order to get the message out to all levels of government that there is a continued need.
5) What is your vision for the future of police services in West Grey?
I would like to see West Grey continue to fund and support our local police service. OPP are struggling to meet the demands of the service they provide now. I believe it is important to have community policing given the issues we deal with today around mental health. Our police officers know the community and the areas that need attention. Many do live in the area also.
6) What issue do you believe is a top priority for West Grey to tackle during the next term?
Policing is a priority. We need to build a police station so our service has an appropriate building to carry out a very important task within West Grey.
