1) Why are you running?
I am running, in order to have a say in, and help direct the future of Meaford. We face some daunting challenges, in the next few years, and I feel I represent the average Meaford ratepayer,in that what I want from our municipality,is, safe roads, decent fire and police services, and some activities to engage our youth, while keeping taxes under control.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
Even though tax increases are inevitable, municipalities not being immune to inflation, it is up to council to balance the need for funding ,versus, the real pain families are experiencing covering their domestic expenses. As well, the municipality should do everything possible to bring about the ten dollar a day daycare program, as well as supporting our local food banks, and outreach programs. Council must be ever vigilant, to eliminate waste, and encourage staff to explore cost saving innovations.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
I would like to see increased focus on our exposure to Hwys 6/10. we have direct Hwy access to some of the largest markets in Ontario, and I would like to explore the feasibility of an industrial park, or an expanded commercial/retail presence . Downtown Meaford seems to have underdeveloped tourist potential, and as for the agricultural industries, I would love to discuss with those involved, how we can help them prosper.
4) Do you think a municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
We can certainly offer potential recruits some of the finest scenery and lifestyle choices in Ontario. And if they see a well-managed, forward looking municipality , it can also help attract the right candidates. In a more limited way, we could help find sites, and ease construction, of suitable clinical facilities. —— Original Message ——
5) Should the municipality pursue more shared services with neighbouring municipalities?
Meaford already has a number of shared services agreements, ranging from snow plowing, on neighboring townline roads, to fire protection on the far west side of the municipality, in order to provide timely service to the residents there. I would certainly be open to more such agreements, providing they are advantageous. From: nshubert@bayshorebroadcasting.ca
6) What issue do you believe is a top priority for Meaford to tackle during the next term?
I believe the most pressing issue all municipalities in Ontario face, is the new legislation which will strip councils of any power in directing future growth. The current government, seems to be willing to simply bulldoze the rights of existing homeowners, in order to advance their misguided agenda, of giving developers a free hand to maximize their profits, at the expense of the neighborhoods, they inflict themselves upon.
