1) Why are you running?
I have served the community of Northern Bruce Peninsula as Councillor for the past four years. I am proud of the accomplishments that our small but strong local government has overseen in that time, and with many projects underway, I am hoping for the opportunity to see them through as Deputy Mayor. I am actively involved in the community and have a strong understanding of the issues that we face, as well as the necessary actions needed to create change. I am proud to represent this area and am hoping to be involved in a larger capacity to advance existing projects and initiate those most important to the constituents of the Northern Bruce Peninsula.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
To reduce the cost of living on a municipal level, we first need to understand where the majority of funds are allocated (and have been allocated in the past) in the annual budget. The budget needs to reflect the current priorities of the municipality, and should reflect the cost of living. The municipality’s investments should be specific to critical infrastructure and improvements. For residential development, we should work to advance permitting approvals efficiently.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
I will continue to support the tourism industry and local businesses where we have seen economic growth in the municipality. I will ensure critical infrastructure projects align with current priorities for local business and ensure the municipality plays a support role to all local business.
4) Do you think a municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
The MNBP currently supports recruitment and will continue to prioritize the recruitment and retention of physicians to build a strong community. By marketing the area as a place physicians can see themselves living long term, the municipality can play a role in enticing more physicians to the area. It is important to note that attracting healthcare workers will also depend on affordable housing available in the area and access to essential and recreational amenities for families.
5) What issue do you believe is a top priority for Northern Bruce Peninsula to tackle during the next term?
I believe the top priority for the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula to tackle over the next term is to work to implement water and wastewater infrastructure in Tobermory and Lion’s Head.
6) What steps could municipalities take to help get more housing built that you support?
Once water and wastewater infrastructure is in place, we will be able to attract potential developers to the area and also help local developers expand their existing footprint. Improving existing permitting processes will also reduce the turnaround time of permit applications and allow for developers to realize their investments in a timely manner making the area more attractive for home buyers.
