1) Why are you running?
I strongly believe in the power of collaboration, communication and effective networking to build a strong community. Our community does have challenges just like any other community but I firmly believe that if there is a problem, there is definitely a solution to it. I want to use my positive perspective to advocate and assist in overcoming challenges we all face together as a community.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to ease the cost of living concerns? If so, what measures would you support?
With inflation soaring, the need of the hour is to stop tax hikes. For now, I suggest we curb our spending and invest only in the necessities.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
We have a beautiful waterfront. I will advocate for its development. It will attract investment, leading to job creation and infrastructure development and generating revenue for the city.
4) Do you think the municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
Yes, municipalities can offer joining bonuses, interest-free loans, offer scholarships to medical students, and promote Grey and Bruce County as areas where you want to be. Provide rent-free or subsidized offices to doctors. At present Owen Sound does not qualify as a community in need, so provincial incentive programs are not available in Owen Sound but are available in Chatsworth and Georgian Bluffs. We need to advocate that based on stats and the need Owen Sound is actually a community in need.
5) What steps could municipalities take to help get more housing built that you support?
There should be no development charges for low-income housing. Legalizing a second unit/ basement residential unit should be made easy, streamlined and quick.
6) Should the city do more to regulate short-term rentals, such as AirBNBs?
I believe the zoning bylaws are there for a reason. In general, commercial activity should not be allowed in residential areas. AirBNBs are a source of income but a bigger source of nuisances. I feel AirBNBs should be strictly regulated. Licensing will help generate revenue and curb nuisances.
