1) Why are you running?
Currently I serve on council and have loved every minute of it. I have learned so much over the last 4 years that I think will be a benefit to the next term of council. Moving up to Deputy Mayor allows me a seat on the County council. Grey county deals with all our regional social services which I believe are an important part of government.
2) Are there any steps municipalities can take to help ease cost of living concerns?
Good question. As a Municipality we can remove barriers to building affordable housing. We can ensure we are being responsible with every tax dollar. We can invest in recreation so that you do not have to travel to get the activities you want.
3) What are your ideas for economic development in your municipality?
Growth is coming down the Hwy 10 corridor, we in Grey Highlands need to prepare for that growth. Shelbourne and Dundalk are showing what unplanned significant growth looks like. As we invest in our roads, infrastructure and arenas/recreation we will be more appealing for business development. Grey Highlands also needs to focus on housing as many businesses are having a difficult time finding staff.
4) Do you think the municipality has a role to play in the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare workers?
Yes Grey Highlands is currently supporting Physician recruitment teaming up with other municipalities in our area. Councillor Allwood sits on the committee. We in Grey Highlands benefit from having the hospital and the CHC located in our area. However we are still in need of more Doctors.
5) What would you like to see for land development in Grey Highlands?
As growth comes to Grey Highlands we need to focus it to our urban centers, Markdale has the services that support housing development. I believe we should protect our farm land so that it can continue to grow our food not houses.
6) What would you like to see for community safety and well-being?
I sit on the community safety and well being committee for Grey and Bruce county. The member ship is over 80 different groups and organizations. Current focus is on strategies that can support residents that are suffering from addiction and other mental health problems. Helping these individuals is benefits everyone as it lowers the risks. Grey Highlands is also working on road safety and pedestrian safety plans that will benefit our community.
