Pumpkinfest is set for this weekend in Port Elgin.
The annual event which features massive pumpkins, vegetables and other plants is a big draw for the town each year.
It also includes two days of giant vegetable weigh offs. The grower with the heaviest pumpkin will get a $3,000 prize. There are weigh offs for squash, watermelon, gourds, tomatoes, marrow and cabbage. There is also a tallest corn and tallest sunflower competition.
2021’s heaviest pumpkin belonged to Jim and Kelsey Bryson from Ormstown, Quebec. It weighed in at 1777.50 lbs.
The festival will officially open with a ceremony featuring the Chantry Singers of Saugeen Shores at 10am on Saturday, October 1st at the Bruce Power Weigh Off Stage.
It will be followed by a Celebrity Seed Event which will be different from the seed spitting of past years.
There will also be giant pumpkin carvings done by a local artist outside the arena.
There will be a midway with rides, and Cinderella’s Carriage Car Show is back again this year featuring classic cars.
There will also be live music. On Friday night, there is a concert behind the Queen’s Bar and Grill. Saturday night’s practically hip concert is sold out.
An artisan craft show will be held inside the Port Elgin legion this year.
The fire department is hosting a junior firefighters obstacle course on Saturday. Ontario Power Generation will also have an environment tent with a ‘Mad Science’ presentation on Saturday.
On Sunday at 2:30 in the Weigh Off Arena, children’s entertainers multiple JUNO award winners and television celebrities, Splash ‘n Boots are set to perform.
