The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 56-year-old man yesterday in Owen Sound.
An SIU release says preliminary information suggests a man was arrested by Owen Sound police on warrants at about 10 Monday morning (Sept 26) in the area of 4th Avenue East in Owen Sound.
He was taken to the police station before he was released later in the day.
The SIU says at about 4 p.m., paramedics were called for the man after he went into medical distress at Tim Hortons at 155 9th Street East.
They say the man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 4:43 p.m.
The SIU says two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for this afternoon.
The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police and other officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. SIU investigators are civilians.
The Director of the SIU must consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident or close the file without any charges being laid and publicly report the results of its investigations.
