Ontario’s lakes and rivers have taken dozens of lives so far this summer, and the OPP are appealing to the public to try to make sure the number does not go higher. At least 17 people have died in boating accidents according to OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt.
Schmidt says the death toll is even grimmer for swimmers.
“I want you to be mindful of your own safety; how quickly someone can get blown away from shore. You end up in deeper water, you start to struggle. We’ve already had 27 drownings this year alone. Nine of them happened in August, and the month is still not done. We just want people to think about their abilities and their skills, and their strengths when they’re on or near the water.”
OPP are reminding boaters to wear PFDs when on the water.
The OPP supports proactive steps that will help reduce drowning deaths, always swimming with a buddy, knowing your limits and swimming abilities, and to never swim while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
