A major redevelopment proposed at the former RCA manufacturing plant property in Owen Sound’s northeast end is moving through the approvals process.
A public meeting was held at city council’s meeting on Monday night and no concerns were raised about an application submitted by SkyDev Bayshore Owen Sound LP — a subsidiary of Guelph-based Skyline Group of Companies — to construct eight, six-storey rental apartment buildings.
In all, 712 units are proposed on the 38.3 acre property at East Bayshore Road and 32nd Street East.
SkyDev vice president of development Carrie Lamarche told councillors they are expecting to offer a mix of one- and two-bedroom units.
A city staff report says the development may be eligible for $3.5-million in development charges exemptions, as all the units will be purpose-built rentals.
The apartment complex would include three parking areas, two amenity buildings, an internal road system and landscaping. Pickleball courts, a fenced dog run, community gardens, fire pits and trails would also be featured at the SkyDev build.
The buildings would also feature indoor games rooms and kitchens.
Lamarche told councillors sustainability is also an important focus in the company’s developments. About five per cent of parking spaces will be designated for electric vehicle charging. Lamarche says SkyDev also trys to incorporate rooftop beehives into its properties.
A traffic impact assessment and parking study were completed in support of the development application.
SkyDev is applying for a zoning by-law amendment to permit the multi-building apartment complex.
A recommendation report is expected to come back to council for approval on Sept. 12.
