from the Selects
The Owen Sound U23 Selects travelled to Woodstock, Ontario and rolled off three consecutive wins to capture the U23 O.A.S.A. Elimination Championship for the second consecutive year.
In the opening game, the Selects defeated the Belmore Sting 9-2 for their first win. Clay Dolbear led the attack with two doubles, a HR and 4 RBIs. Brendan Hagerman chipped in with a double and single while Brady Hogg, Dallas Kipfer, Wade Kewageshig, Tucker Firth and Mitch McComb recorded singles. Winning pitcher Riley Manion allowed 1 ER while striking out 10. Belmore’s Austin Eadie and Colton Quipp had Belmore’s only hits while Mac Mulvey took the loss in the circle.
The win set up a duel with the Tavistock Merchants who defeated Alvinston in their first game of the day. After 5 scoreless innings, the Selects put 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the 6th and won 4-0 to advance to the championship game. Clay Dolbear led the offence again with a HR and 2 RBIs. Brady Hogg, Dallas Kipfer, Wade Kewageshig and Mitch McComb added singles again. Winning pitcher Riley Manion was a beast on the mound striking out 14 while giving up 5 hits. Reese Yantzi allowed 5 hits, 2BB and struck out 10 in a losing cause.
With the Selects advancing to the finals on Sunday afternoon, the Tavistock squad defeated Belmore in the semi-final to set up a rematch from the day before. The Merchants scored 3 runs in the top of the first and the Selects answered back with three of their own. The Selects went on to win 10-3 and claim their second consecutive U23 Elimination O.A.S.A. Championship.
Catcher Brendan Hagerman had a double, two singles and 3 RBI’s. Clay Dolbear added his 3rd homerun of the tournament along with Owen Torrie hitting his first. Aidan Yarde, James Martell, Brady Hogg and Dallas Kipfer all had a hit apiece. The play of the game saw Martell dive up the middle and throw a runner out at first base and stop a Tavistock rally. Riley Manion once again took the mound to lead the Selects to victory while giving up 3 ER while striking out 7 batters. Tavistock’s Mitch McKay had two hits for Tavistock with Reese Yantzi taking the loss. Manion’s dominance on the mound brought him the Most Valuable Pitcher Award and Dolbear’s 5 hits including 3 HRs saw him take the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
The victory on the weekend booked the Selects a spot in the U23 Canadian Championships in Carp, Ontario running from Aug 2-7th. They will be Ontario 1 and will be joined by Tavistock and Belmore who finished 2nd and 3rd along with Osgoode who will be the host for the prestigious event
