As part of the reconciliation process, a Commitment Rock has been installed next to Huntsville’s Town Hall in commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.
While a formal ceremony hasn’t been scheduled yet, residents are able to view the rock and reflect, listen, learn, and heal.
The Town will continue to consult with indigenous educators and formally recognize the installation in the near future.
Mayor Terziano reflects on how the Commitment Rock installation is another step toward Council’s commitment:
“The installation will be a lasting reminder that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, an acknowledgment of the tragedy of the residential schools and a commitment to reconciliation,” says the Mayor.
The rock has been engraved with the Town’s land acknowledgment statement to recognize that the Town is built on the traditional territory of indigenous people and incorporates bronze moccasins to honor the lives of residential school children and survivors.
The Town of Huntsville is committed to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
