Doug Ford is re-elected Premier of Ontario
2022 Ontario election coverage presented by Pete’s Auto Body
Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives have won a strengthened majority government in their second election.
Premier Ford and the PCs will head back to Queen’s Park with 83 seats in the legislature, seven more than they won in 2018.
The New Democrats managed to elect 31 MPPs and will remain the official opposition, but will be doing so under new leadership.
Hamilton Centre MPP Andrea Horwath announced she is stepping down from her post as head of the party. She’s been leader of the Ontario NDP since 2009.
Liberal Party Leader Steven Del Duca also resigned last night after another disatrous election showing for the Ontario Liberals. He lost in his home riding of Vaughan Woodbridge, while the party once again failed to achieve official party status, only winning eight seats across the province.
PCs Sweep Local Ridings
Progressive Conservative Rick Byers won in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound with more than 48 per cent of the vote, holding the seat that was held by PC Bill Walker for the last 10-plus years before he decided to leave politics.
In Huron-Bruce, Progressive Conservative Lisa Thompson — a member of Ford’s cabinet as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs — is heading back to Queen’s Park for a fourth term as MPP.
And in Simcoe-Grey, Progressive Conservative and former Collingwood Mayor Brian Saunderson won the riding that was formerly held by Jim Wilson.
