The Town of Saugeen Shores is taking the month of June to promote bike safety.
The town says it is joining other communities across on Ontario to celebrate the month for the first time since since 2019.
The town says the month is starting off with the Bike to School Challenge, which runs from May 30 to June 2, and is used as a friendly competition between some of the town’s elementary schools.
During their challenge, drivers are being advised they may see more children and families riding their bikes on municipal roads and trails and to be extra aware during this period.
Police Chief Kevin Zettel says they welcome any opportunity to increase community awareness about bike safety, road safety and the responsibilities of all road users.
“We look forward to involving kinds in our June Positive Ticketing campaign for safely riding their bikes. We also want to remind drivers to use extra caution around schools, especially during the challenge,” says Zettel.
The month will also include guided bike rides, bike valets, a self-guided kids cycling scavenger hunt, a kids bike night in Southampton, and Anything But a Car Day.
Mayor Like Charbonneau says bike month is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to get out and explore what Saugeen Shores has to offer while on their bikes.
“These activities are continuing to work to be a bicycle-friendly community and I encourage everyone to take part,” says Charbonneau.
The town says regularly scheduled community rides, as well as weekly bike valets, and bike friendly Fridays will occur throughout the months of July and August.
