New measures to curb handgun access in Canada are an important part of Federal legislation tabled this afternoon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it includes a national freeze on handgun ownership.
“What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, import, or transfer handguns anywhere in Canada,” he said at a press conference after the tabling.
Trudeau says gun smuggling and trafficking will also be fought with maximum penalties.
And the Feds will now require permanent alterations of long gun magazines so they can never hold more than five rounds.
Once approved, the bill will create a new ‘red flag’ law which would see courts rule that people who are considered a danger to themselves or others must surrender their firearms to the police.
The legislation would also allow for the removal of gun licenses from those involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment like stalking.
