The Province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after an altercation in Orillia which involved police fatally shooting a dog.
The occupant of a suspicious vehicle that was under investigation was also injured in the incident, which happened in a north-end neighborhood early Sunday morning.
At 3:15 am OPP responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle with multiple occupants and a dog, parked on Grace Avenue.
Upon speaking with the occupants, police determined two had outstanding warrants. As officers attempted to arrest the occupants, an altercation ensued.
An officer was attacked by the dog and received serious injuries. An officer discharged a firearm to stop the dog and the dog died. One vehicle occupant also sustained injuries during the incident.
As a result of the investigation, three people were arrested and charged.
A 35-year-old man from Orillia, was charged with:
· Assault a Peace Officer – two counts
· Assault a Peace Officer – bodily harm
· Assault a Peace Officer – weapon
· Assault- intent to resist – two counts
· Escape Lawful Custody
· Obstruct Peace Officer
· Possession of a schedule 1 substance – two counts
· Possession of a schedule 1 substance – trafficking – two counts
A 35-year-old woman from Orillia, was charged with:
· Assault a Peace Officer – two counts
· Assault a Peace Officer – bodily harm
· Assault a Peace Officer – weapon
· Assault- intent to resist – two counts
· Escape Lawful Custody
· Obstruct Peace Officer
· Possession of a schedule 1 substance – two counts
· Possession of a schedule 1 substance – trafficking – two counts
A 34-year-old woman from Barrie, was charged with:
· Assault a Peace Officer
· Assault a Peace Officer
· Assault with intent to resist
· Assault with intent to resist
· Escape lawful custody
· Obstruct a Peace Officer
All accused were held for bail hearings.
The OPP has notified the Province’s SIU, which has invoked its mandate.
