Students who protested their school dress code in Owen Sound last week have gotten the attention of their school and their school board.
St. Mary’s High School students marched in protest on May 19th, saying their dress code unfairly targeted female students and they wanted changes to who enforced the dress code and how they enforced it.
Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board Director of Education Gary O’Donnell says in an interview, “School administration has met with the students and will continue to work with them to address their concerns.”
O’Donnell, says, “We, the school board respect the student voice and the right of students to bring attention to school administration, any area of concern.”
O’Donnell says St. Mary’s Principal Kirby has met with the students at least twice now.
He also says students have avenues to address concerns through their student trustees, student parliament and student senate.
When asked if students are allowed to protest, O’Donnell says, “We respect the right of students, our preference is during the school day, that students are in classes because then we know they’re safe.”
He adds, the issue provides an opportunity to share with the students the existing avenues exist through which they can voice their concerns.
With the school year drawing to a close in the next few weeks, O’Donnell notes, it’s possible changes could be implemented in the fall.
