Grey Bruce OPP issued a lot of speeding tickets and also nabbed 10 people for stunt driving during its Canada Road Safety Week traffic enforcement initiative, which coincided with the May long weekend.
Provincial Police say all available members of Grey Bruce OPP took part in the week-long traffic safety campaign from May 17-23, patrolling roadways in the area primarily for impaired, distracted and aggressive driving, as well as failing to wear a seatbelt.
Police issued 100 speeding tickets on OPP patrolled highways in the Grey Bruce detachment area. Ten motorists were charged with stunt driving. Grey Bruce OPP say they also laid three careless driving charges, three fail to properly wear a seatbelt, one distracted driving and eight impaired driving.
“Given the substantial increase in visitors to the area over the May 24th long weekend, it was great to see that the vast majority of those travelling through the Grey Bruce OPP detachment area were doing so in a responsible and sensible manner,” says Grey Bruce OPP Acting Staff Sergeant Darryl Porterfield in a release. “What is troubling to see, is that our officers had to take eight impaired drivers off our roadways. Those are eight drivers that could have potentially taken lives by making the decision to drive while their ability to do so was impaired. The campaign may have ended, but our officers will continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring that the roadways in Grey Bruce are among the safest in the province.”
