After two lost seasons from the pandemic, the Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars made their return to the floor.
They’ll just have to wait a bit longer for a win.
Marshall Powless and Leland Powless each scored a pair of goals, as the Six Nations Rivermen clipped the North Stars 10-8 in Owen Sound’s 2022 Ontario Series Lacrosse season opener at the Six Nations Sports and Cultural Memorial Centre Saturday night.
It was a one goal game in the final minute. Six Nations led 9-8 and Owen Sound called a timeout with 47 seconds left and pulled goaltender Landon Keels for an extra attacker.
Travis Gibbons ended up trying a shot from the middle that was blocked and Brooker Muir went the other way and hit the empty net with 19 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Riley Thomson finished with seven points, three goals for the North Stars.
Owen Sound trailed 3-2 after the first period. Tyler Brown and Leland Powless scored to stake Six Nations to a 2-0 lead just over five minutes in.
Andy Campbell and Travis Gibbons scored on back-to-back possessions for Owen Sound, 25 seconds apart, to tie the game at 6:38.
Marshall Powless scored a short-handed goal with 3:41 remaining in the first to put the home side back in front.
The two teams traded goals to start the second period, then the North Stars scored three unanswered to take their first lead of the game 6-5 just prior to the midway mark.
Powless and Whitlow answered with power play goals to put Six Nations back in front 7-6 after two.
Thomson struck on the power play with a low shot about five minutes into the third to tie the game 7-7.
Vern Hill Junior and Tye Argent then found the net for Six Nations to make it 9-7.
With 5:55 remaining, Jordan Caskenette scored a highlight reel goal, taking a pass in motion from behind the net and going behind the back with the shot to beat Dustin Hill and pull Owen Sound within one.
That was as close as they would get.
The North Stars play their next game on Friday, May 13 on the road against Clearview.
560 CFOS will carry the game live on Leon’s and McArthur Tire North Stars Radio.
