The provincial government is providing $16.3 million for the replacement of St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School in Owen Sound.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker was joined by several Bruce-Grey Catholic School Board officials Friday for the funding announcement.
The funding is on top of nearly $19.7-million announced in 2020 for an addition to St. Mary’s, bringing the total to over $36.1-million from the province to create over 1,000 student spaces.
It’s expected the new school will be built in three or four years.
According to a report by the Owen Sound Sun-Times, the site for the new build has yet to be determined.
Board Chair Lori DiCastri says, “we are so pleased with the announcement of funding for a new St. Mary’s Catholic High School. Our Catholic High School in Owen Sound has been experiencing overcrowding for many years and we look forward to opening the door to a new and innovative space that is right sized for our staff and students. This is very exciting news for BGCDSB, the City of Owen Sound and the surrounding area.”
Walker adds the new St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School is great news for our community.
“This investment will provide choice and flexibility for families and new opportunities for local students and for the next generation,” says Walker.
Walker’s office says this project is part of a province wide investment of about $500 million to support new school and childcare spaces, which was recently announced by Education Minister Stephen Lecce.
In addition, the province is also providing school boards with $1.4 billion in funding for 2022-23 to renew and maintain existing schools.
