The Owen Sound Attack still have a shot at overtaking the Guelph Storm for fifth in the Ontario Hockey League’s western conference after a win over the Barrie Colts.
Cedrick Guindon and Servac Petrovsky each had a pair of goals, as the Attack cruised past the Colts 4-1 in OHL action at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre Wednesday night.
Declan McDonnell scored the lone goal for Barrie. The Attack scored twice in the second to take a 2-0 lead, then added two more early in the third to break the game open.
Guindon’s second goal of the game was his 30th of the season, which set a new Owen Sound franchise record for goals as a rookie.
Ryan Christie’s 29 goals for the Platers in 1995-96 was the previous mark.
Nick Chenard made 35 saves in the win, while Matteo Lalama stopped 21 taking the loss. Barrie outshot Owen Sound 36-25 while going 0 for 2 on the power play; the Attack finished 2 for 4.
With the win, the Attack’s shot at catching Guelph for fifth in the west remains alive.
Owen Sound closes out its regular season on Saturday at home against the Kitchener Rangers. Guelph faces Kitchener Friday and the Windsor Spitfires Saturday.
A loss by the Attack, or a single point for Guelph over its final two games, and Owen Sound will finish sixth and get the Flint Firebirds in Round 1 of the OHL playoffs.
A playoff series with the Soo Greyhounds awaits the fifth-place finisher in the OHL’s western conference.
