OPP are warning about a new scam, which nearly defrauded two Huron County residents.
Police say a pair of victims reported receiving text messages from scammers notifying them the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and Service Canada had validation permit (or valtag) refunds for them.
A link was attached to the message, which led the victims to a website, where they were asked to provide personal information.
In a news release, police say both victims contacted their banks and their bank cards were cancelled prior to sustaining any monetary loss.
OPP say any legitimate agency will never request a payment by Interac e-transfer, online currency such as bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards or pre-paid gift cards such as Google Play, iTunes, etc.
Police say the best advice for dealing with scam texts is to do nothing at all.
