A request to construct four beach volleyball courts in Kincardine has been approved by the Committee of the Whole.
During a meeting on April 4, a report was brought forward with a request from the Kincardine Outdoor Volleyball Association (KOVA) to build four new courts at Station Beach at the north side of the Rotary Snack Shack, for an estimated project cost of $63,000.
The report says the KOVA seeks to have the project financed by the municipality, which can be covered up front through the Contingency Reserve. The KOVA will repay the municipality over a maximum of eight year through fundraising efforts and future league revenues.
The report says on Jan. 10, the KOVA presented the prospect of establishing an outdoor volleyball league at the waterfront to council, and have the municipality finance the project with a repayment plan.
The report adds with the construction of the courts, the municipality will manage the construction phase of the project.
Kincardine Director of Community Services Jayne Jagelewski says the group scouted out four potential areas to build the four courts, looking at nearby amenities to determine which would be the most preferable spot to host a successful beach volleyball league.
“The area next to the Snack Shack, on the north side, checked off the amenities that they required in order to accommodate four courts and has far more amenities than the other areas that were considered,” says Jagelewski.
The report will be returning to council on April 20 for final approval.
