A 22-year-old Owen Sound man who allegedly went on a wild ride through part of the city’s downtown earlier this week has been arrested and charged by police.
City Police say an officer observed a male driving a car in the area of 3rd Avenue East and 11th Street East who was known to be unlicensed around 5 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Police say the officer conducted a traffic stop in a fully marked police vehicle; but as the officer began to exit the car, the 22-year-old Owen Sound driver took off.
According to police, the suspect driver quickly accelerated and drove down the middle of the road in reverse for about a block, ignoring a stop sign in the process.
Poice say the driver then hit a parked trailer along 4th Avenue East, failed to remain at the scene and fled the area.
“At the time, the weather conditions were poor with heavy rainfall and wet, slippery roads,” says Owen Sound Police Const. Brent Down in a release. “There were also pedestrians and moderate vehicular traffic in the area, so we are extremely fortunate that nobody was injured during this careless and senseless act.”
Owen Sound Police continued to investigate and arrested the driver the following day (Thursday).
City Police say the 22-year-old male, who has not been identified, faces several Highway Traffic Act offences and criminal charges.
Police did not disclose the specific criminal offences the accused has been charged with.
The 22-year-old man is due to make a court appearance in May.
