The OPP is reminding area residents that no ice is safe ice especially as it’s starting to melt on area water bodies.
OPP Constable Ryan Lehr from Central Region’s SAVE Team says ice conditions are becoming unstable and unpredictable, especially along shorelines.
He says if you are venturing out, be prepared for self-rescue.
“If you have the ability to wear a survival floater suit do so or borrow one from a friend,” he says. “As well, carry a pair of ice picks that will assist you in self-rescue and have a fully charged cell phone preferably in a waterproof case so you have the ability to call for help. As well, please let a friend or family member know where you are and what time you are expected back.”
Lehr says to always have a plan in place in case you need to self-rescue and to be smart, be safe, and remember – no ice is safe ice.
Ice conditions are quickly becoming unsafe and unstable. If you do take the risk to venture out, tell someone where you're going, wear a floater suit, bring ice picks and be prepared to self-rescue. #NoIceIsSafeIce #OPPSAVE ^rl/gp pic.twitter.com/xOfhlxr9mk
