The Conservative MP for Huron-Bruce has introduced a bill in the House of Commons to assist the country’s farmers.
The bill tabled by Ben Lobb looks to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act (GHGPPA), exempting certain farming operations using natural gas and propane from the federal carbon tax.
Proposed exemptions include grain drying and housing livestock, something a news release says, “is a crucial change, as these activities are not optional for farmers.”
The current GHGPPA began in 2018, and will rise to $50 per tonne of CO2 in 2022, up from $40 per tonne.
