There are early indications that COVID-19 infections may have peaked at the national level but the severe impact on hospitals continues.
During an update on the National pandemic picture today, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said daily hospital and ICU numbers are still rising steeply and many hospitals remain under intense strain.
Tam says the high volume of Omicron cases over the past week has seen over 10,000 people being treated in hospital each day.
“This includes over 1,100 people in ICU’s which is higher than all but the third wave peak,” she said. “During the same period, there were on average 131 deaths reported each day.”
Tam says getting vaccinated is still the best defense to protect yourself during the pandemic.
